Review – Eddie Chong’s Faht Shan (Pan Nam) Wing Chun Set

This is a 3 DVD set. Each DVD in the set is reviewed in detail here.

What Disk 1 is about:

Master Sifu Eddie Chong, of the Fushan White Eyebrow-Fushan Wing Chun Kung Fu Association presents a demonstration of all the classic forms of Grandmaster Pan Nam, of the “Faht Shan” Wing Chun Tradition. The three forms shown in this DVD are, Sil Nim Tao, Chum Kiu and Bil Gee.

Comments on Disk 1:

“Faht Shan Wing Chun”, is considered the official lineage of the Wing Chun system recognized by the Government of the Peoples Republic of China and therefore is referred as the “Chinese System” of Wing Chun as it relates to the Ip Man WC system and is referred to as the “Hong Kong system” of Wing Chun Kung Fu. I am sure there’s lots of debate among WC factions in Shanghai and Hong Kong, who would feel quite differently regarding this official sanction by mainland China. However, this review will discuss the instructional content and value of Eddie Chong’s WC DVDs, and will leave the matter of which system is considered the official lineage of WC to martial art historians.  However, I will say this…martial art institutions are just as much a political animal in China as the two party political systems in America.  Enough said.

Review – Emin Boztepe’s Punching Techniques

After Emin Boztepe’s interview in Issue 2 of WCI, I’m sure you would agree that he is an outspoken individual. But how does Punching Techniques stand up as an instructional DVD and what can it offer the Wing Chun student?

Review – Randy Williams’ Biu Jitsu Ground Fighting 1 & 2

If ever there was an argument for Wing Chun’s effectiveness in “realistic street fighting”, then its apparent lack of a “ground game” is surely the one most fought over. Step up Biu Jitsu from Randy Williams, which claims to show and teach you Wing Chun’s Ground Fighting System.

Review – David Peterson’s Muk Yan Jong Seminar

The dictionary defines the word “definitive” as “…most reliable or complete, as of a text, author, criticism, study,” and also, “…having its fixed and final form; providing a solution or final answer; satisfying all criteria.” And this is exactly what this DVD is. It is the most comprehensive and informative DVD I have watched in my time writing for WCI. David Peterson has been training in the Chinese martial arts since 1973. He became a student of Wong Shun Leung after travelling to Hong Kong in 1983. It is David’s sole aim to pass on the skills, knowledge and understanding of Wing Chun exactly as Sifu taught them to him.

Review – Gary Lam’s Awesome Kicking Techniques DVD

“Awesome Kicking Techniques” is the second of sifu Lam’s Wing Chun kicking DVDs. Essentially, this DVD is a DVD that uses various exercises, equipment and drills, both alone and with partner, to enhance and train Wing Chun kicking. In that respect this DVD is quite different from Sifu Lam’s other Wing Chun kicking DVD, “Wing Chun Kicking 1.” It should be stated that this is an advanced level Wing Chun DVD and not for the beginning Wing Chun student.

In this DVD, the United Kingdom Wing Chun Kung Fu Association have created an essential accompaniment to a unique, but often overlooked piece of Wing Chun apparatus: the wallbag. The DVD is the second in the series of instructional videos produced by the UKWCKFA and features Master James Sinclair.

Review – Wong & Bustillo’s Bruce Lee’s Fighting Method

Bruce Lee is still as popular now as he was before his untimely passing in 1973, so this DVD will need no introduction.

However, Bruce’s fighting method, Jeet Kune Do, like Wing Chun, has had its fair share of political in-fighting over the years. Despite this, JKD is still vastly popular and it is clear from this DVD that what Lee showed on screen is a world apart from what he taught in his private classes.
