Quick Summary:
This video provides all of the basic Yip Man – Wooden Dummy form (Muk Yan Jong) demonstrating all 116 movements. Instruction begins with a discussion of the dummy’s construction, reasons are given for the differences in the dummy’s arm positions and why they are adjustable. The proper stance and position of one’s arms are shown, and how to correctly measure the distance from the dummy, so the form’s sequence and applications are executed correctly. A demonstration of the Muk Yan Jong form includes all of the basic movements and techniques from the system’s three forms. Generally, wooden dummy practice emphasizes the centerline of the Siu Nim Tau, the bridging techniques of the Chum Kiu and the advance techniques of Bi Gee, known for its importance in expressing power. Footwork and applications are demonstrated, showing how one moves properly, so that structure is maintained, while employing technique. This aspect of Wing Chun training on the dummy is essential for the development of effective technical skill and application in combat.

Reviews Comments
This production is available free online, which is a definite plus for someone on a tight budget. I only have one reservation about this video, but, it’s minor. Sifu Di Goirgio, demonstrates the Muk Yan Jong form, in his bare feet, that’s okay, but practicing the form with shoes changes the practice… and sometimes dramatically. How one moves in their bare feet and techniques used is different! Training in shoes, provide weight and protection that you would not usually have in certain kinds of situations. In American society, shoes are worn in all public places, as opposed to some traditions in Asian Cultures. The essential point, I’m making here, is the feel and practicing in shoes is different. Wearing mountain boots for example might change your execution of a particular technique or may restrict your choices for certain kinds of applications. If you strive for diversity in technique…practice both in ways.
