Gary Lam is very well known and respected in the Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun community, but to other lineages he may need a brief introduction. Gary Lam trained with Master Wong Shun Leung for fifteen years and served as the instructor at Wong’s school for an additional six years. As Wong Shun Leung’s top student, Lam put his Wing Chun skills to test by entering many tournaments and defeating the opposition. He was crowned Hong Kong Full Contact Tournament Champion in 1978-1979. In 1991, his Wing Chun peers in Hong Kong elected him the President of the Hong Kong Wing Chun Society. Fighting Strategy is one of many Lam titles available from Cranes Production and focuses on the plans and tips you need to improve your overall fighting ability—in the ring and on the street.
The DVD is more of a lecture than a seminar, with Lam explaining in detail the theories and methods of his Wing Chun system. So if you have a problem learning this way, you may find it hard going. For me, I could listen to Gary Lam all day, but for others, it may take some further digging and concentration to extract the important information found on this DVD.
Another refreshing thing about what Lam has to offer is how your mental state will play an important part in your fighting ability, something that is overlooked on other DVDs I have seen recently. My only gripe would be the lack of actual demonstrations. There are a few, but I believe it would have made the seminar easier to digest if there had been even more.
So in conclusion, if you are from the WSL lineage you will find lots to ingest here, but other lineages may find it a bit hard going… I loved it!
