Review – Moy Yat – Luk Dim Boon Kwan

The Luk Dim Boon Kwan (“Six-and-a-Half Point Pole”) has evolved from being a once guarded and revered level of learning the Wing Chun system, to a form of reward for one’s dedication, knowledge, and evolved skill sets alongside the Baat Jaam Do.

Moy Yat’s family opens their personal film vaults to present to the practitioner/audience the late Sifu Moy Yat himself demonstrating and explaining the what, why and how of the Kwan’s relevance to overall training. The production of this series of videos was to, “help the younger generations to better understand Wing Chun—not (originally) intended for distribution,” with their posthumous release. Sourced from the original private recordings and enhanced for the Moy Yat lineage practitioners and beyond to enjoy.

Review – Sifu Sergio – Kam Na 2

Gaining control over a potentially dangerous attacker is one thing, but rendering their resources moot sometimes requires more than an arsenal of techniques intended to physically demolish them. Learning to lock up an unruly individual is especially relevant to those working in the security field, where demolishing someone will be met with legal consequences in today’s society, as the consequences befall the retaliator before the instigator. In this second installment in his video series on locks and submissions, Sifu Sergio Iadarola wastes no time in getting his hands working with an extra look at Chinese Joint Locks.

Interview – German Ferrer on his Customized Butterfly Swords

We recently made some customized swords for one of our customers, Sifu German Ferrer. Sifu Ferrer was kind enough to take some photos of himself with the swords and we thought it might be a great opportunity to ask him some questions about why he chose the design he did and about the process in general.  His design was a mix of elements we use on the Flagship line of Swords and the Tomb Warrior line of swords. This is what he had to say:

Review – Sifus Taner & Graziano – Wooden Dummy Form

Quick Summary:

This video provides all of the basic Yip Man – Wooden Dummy form (Muk Yan Jong) demonstrating all 116 movements. Instruction begins with a discussion of the dummy’s construction, reasons are given for the differences in the dummy’s arm positions and why they are adjustable. The proper stance and position of one’s arms are shown, and how to correctly measure the distance from the dummy, so the form’s sequence and applications are executed correctly. A demonstration of the Muk Yan Jong form includes all of the basic movements and techniques from the system’s three forms. Generally, wooden dummy practice emphasizes the centerline of the Siu Nim Tau, the bridging techniques of the Chum Kiu and the advance techniques of Bi Gee, known for its importance in expressing power. Footwork and applications are demonstrated, showing how one moves properly, so that structure is maintained, while employing technique. This aspect of Wing Chun training on the dummy is essential for the development of effective technical skill and application in combat.

Review – Darrell Jordan – Muk Yan Jong DVD

Quick Summary:

This training video is presented in five basic categories. Instruction starts with preparatory drills, to condition one’s arms in striking the dummy using the basic techniques while hitting the Jong arms, from there outside and inside position. These preparation drills, demonstrate the fundamental hand techniques of used in Wing Chun, such as the Tan, Bong, Gong, Quan, Huen and the Double Jut Sau. The form is broken down into ten training sections, demonstrating the various hands and kicking techniques of the Muk Yan Jong form. However, there is no demonstration showing how the various Wing Chun, hand and kicking techniques are used in applications. Sifu Jordan, demonstrates the wooden dummy form at full speed and has, two of his instructors present the form as well. Of further interest, the Muk Yan Jong shown in this video, its leg stake is bent with its end pointing downward toward the main body of the Wooden Dummy. This simulates a person standing with a natural posture versus an opponent extending a leg slightly forward.

Review – Keith R Kernspecht – The Myth of the Wooden Dummy

Quick Summary:

This video presents the wooden dummy form and applications differently, than you would find in other productions of the same type. Yet the Muk Yan Jong form, shows as one would expect, a straightforward demo of the forms sequence. Each training section taught includes the familiar techniques or “Hands” of classic Wing Chun applications. The “Chi Gert” techniques demonstrated show how they’re setup for their execution. Less Wing Chun terminology is used or said describing “Hands.” This is not a video teaching the specialized terms associated with technique. However, its intent focuses on specific applications stemming from the forms sequence showing a sense of flow and control in their implementation. One will discover a difference in how techniques are demonstrated with a real display of competence in Wing Chun skill. This video goes beyond the usual lockstep approach… such as “when he does this, I will counter with this” technique. Perhaps, an interest to some, this video shows how to deal with a grappler or wrestler’s attack; an essential skill for any Wing Chun practitioner to have. There are also, appropriate impromptu or “free hand” fighting situations demonstrated by Grand master Kernspecht and his students.
