Review – Ian Protheroe’s DVD, The Wing Chun Fighting System

What it’s about:

Ivan Protheroe presents his interpretation of Wing Chun as a fighting system and its combative techniques. Sifu Protheroe is also a life member of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association which was established by the first generation of students of Yip Man (Ip Man).

Comments:

Wing Chun is a complex and effective method of martial arts which includes many techniques found in other systems of Chinese Wushu. However, many of the means used in training and in applications are unique to the Wing Chun system. Sifu Protheroe provides an in-depth presentation of the system’s application of the combative arts specific to the trapping hands and takedown maneuvers.

Review – Gary Lam’s Wing Chun Kicking Instructional DVD

Most non- Wing Chun martial artists associate Wing Chun solely with hand techniques, but in fact from the very first form of Wing Chun, “Sil Lim Tau,” stance and leg work are there, but perhaps not obvious to the casual observer or even student. Kicking per se does not actually come into play until “Cham Kiu,” and is further examined in the “Mook Yan Jong form.” “Wing Chun Kicking 1” DVD by Sifu Gary Lam, a long time student of Wong Shun Leung, explores the world on Wing Chun kicking. Sifu Lam explains that Wing Chun kicking is effective because the Wing Chun kick does not stop and moves forward. A leg can continue to kick multiple times if necessary or if the chance presents itself step forward. There are six sections on the DVD that deal with Wing Chun kicking and demonstrate repeatedly the eight kicks found in the Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun lineage. Each section on the DVD explores Wing Chun kicks slightly differently. The DVD begins with Sifu Lam demonstrating the kicks and progresses to demonstration against student, two students, Mook Yan Jong demonstration, some exercises for kicking, and concludes with examples “real -world fighting” using Wing Chun kicks. This last section is where both Wong Shun Leung’s and Sifu Lam’s fighting experience benefit the viewer. “Wing Chun Kicking Instructional DVD” will make a welcome addition to any Wing Chun practitioner’s arsenal as the DVD explores the seldom explored world of Wing Chun kicking.

Review – Jim Fung’s Wing Chun DVD

What it’s about:

Grandmaster Jim Fung – International Wing Chun Academy – presents the fundamentals of Sil Lim Tao’s attacks and Defenses.

Comments:

Master Jim Fung is a direct descendant of Wing Chun’s Grand Master Cho Shong Tin and Ip man. In this DVD the fundamentals of the Sil Lim Tao form are given with specific applications related to various attack scenarios. The form is presented just as you would expect in the first part of the video, with Master Jung going through the complete sequence and following up with showing the proper position of the hands and feet in the Ma Bo stance. Master Jung’s manner of presentation of the Wing Chun system, however, is quite different from what you would expect from Grand Master Tin.

Review – Joseph Lee’s Attack and Counter Attack DVD

What it’s about:

This DVD covers the basic techniques of Wing Chun Kung Fu, demonstrating the potential of the system’s attacks and counter attacks while showing its training methods in the Chi Sao, and the relevant application of its locks (Chin Na), take downs and leg work.

Comments:

Sifu Joseph Lee’s, instructional DVD contains a wealth of information on Wing Chun’s fighting system. It’s really not intended for the beginner; one must at least have a basic understanding of the system’s associated forms and principles to appreciate what’s there.

Review – Allan Lee’s Fundamental Wing Chun Kung Fu DVD

What it’s about:

Master Allan Lee presents his interpretation of what he considers as the fundamental principles that guide good Wing Chun Practice and its applications.

Comments:

This is a no frills instructional DVD on Wing Chun, there are no fancy camera angles, pleasing studio backgrounds, fade in and out frames, or text introducing the terms for various hand techniques. Master Lee, states from the beginning of his instruction, that what he teaches regarding the fundamental aspects of practicing Wing Chun Kung Fu, are his own ideas or interpretation about the art. However, in spite of the unassuming nature of this production, there is much practical advice offered by this skilled Wing Chun Master.

Review – William Cheung’s Street Fight DVD 2 – No Rules Rumble

What it’s about:

Sifu Eric Orem continues with his interview of Master William Cheung’s street fight exploits and his demonstration of Wing Chun applications for fight situations where there are no rules.

Comments:

Master Cheung talks about his encounters with Hong Kong’s Triad’s or street gangs of the 1950’s. He gives an historic account of the three most powerful gangs during one of China’s most tremulous eras after World War II and how the various gang organizations immigrated throughout the world establishing a network of gang associations in San Francisco, New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as in South East Asia. The Triad or what some have referred to as the Chinese Tong, Master Cheung stated that many of China’s historical figures of government came out of the triad system. One can assume that even today there exist apparent links with members of the Central Committee of the People’s Republic of China. Even though the west has had a tremendous impact on the country’s economic development, traditional customs are still very strong in many of the cities and in the small villages throughout China’s countryside.

Review – William Cheung’s Street Fight DVD 3 – Muay Thai Melee

What it’s about:

This DVD is the last of a three volume series about street fighting applications of Wing Chun system. In this edition discussion and the application of Wing Chun methods of attack and defense are emphasized in dealing with a Muay Thai martial art Challenger.

Comments:

With the growing popularity of mixed martial arts and Muay Thai boxing, Sifu Eric Orem asks Master William Cheung if he ever had to fight a Muay Thai boxer. Master Cheung shares with the viewer a past encounter he had with Thai boxers in the spring of 1962, while living in Sidney Australia. It seems that during Cheung’s early years, he often had to defend the honor of his friends who were bullied by local tyrants. His friend Howard, in Sidney, was often harassed by some Thai boxers attending the same local college, and he had asked William Cheung, to speak in his behalf and request from these guys if they would just cool it. So a meeting was setup to take care of the situation. Of course Master Cheung was victorious, but he did sustain some injury. This is an interesting story, because at times when your buddies say they will be right behind you, but when the action starts they’re nowhere in sight. I won’t spoil the details of the fight you’ll just have to get the DVD to learn how Cheung dealt with the challenge of facing three Muay Thai Boxers on his own.
