WCI Review - Wing Chun Masters: Vol. 2 - Gary Lam & Alan Lamb
In the second of two video volumes, the featured guests are Sifus Gary Lam and Alan Lamb. Both individuals have contributed greatly to the propagation of Wing Chun in their own right, magnanimously sharing unique and quality content to their respective sections. This sit-down with the two esteemed practitioners works from their roots, through their growth, to cultivating their communities of global student bodies.
Sifu Gary Lam's segment makes up the majority of this volume's run-time with an expansive insight into the man and his method beginning with his start under the late Sifu Lok Yiu, migrating over to the late Sifu Wong Shun Leung, and becoming one of the latter's top fighters and representatives of his teacher and his system. He speaks with a childlike reverence for his Sifu's memory and the impact left on Sifu Lam's life as both a person and a practitioner.
The theme of Sifu Gary Lam's segment is in stride with the means of the system for one to be able to translate it into fighting applications. "The most important (thing)… is not to chase hands", shares the incredibly skilled Master. Reinforcing this fundamental concept with a series of simple, direct, and efficient demonstrations so powerful that one can feel them through the screen. "The point is to control your opponent… and finish him", he continues while effortlessly letting his hands do the talking that his words complement with simple, yet expansive wisdom. Each demonstration that follows the interview portions is live, fast, and furious without wasted actions.
The second segment transplants Sifu Lam from seat to stage with 25 minutes of class instruction. On top of Wing Chun fundamentals applied dynamically and effectively, the audience is then treated to a video submission rarity with an instructional section focusing on both Baat Jaam Do and Luk Dim Boon Gwun—a gem of a segment that any serious student would want in their reference library collection.
Sifu Lamb's modest 15-minute section is short in run-time and deep in content. "The idea is to train your arms and legs to do the right thing at the right time", he states in establishing a universal mandate of the system while he articulately expands upon that point. The theme of his presentation provides the audience with a methodology of the what, why and how to train to extract the value of the system's potential to garner optimal results.
The hallmark of a good teacher is to impart information that a student can apply. Sifu Lamb has an exceptional capacity to articulate information that provokes thought in the audience, which also reflects on him continuing to be a scholar and an instructor. Putting those words to work in form and function with demonstrative drills that evolve to the application. Both featured Masters in this volume offer a wealth of knowledge that the viewer will extract dozens of hours of information.
