WCI Review - William Cheung - Tasmanian Wing Chun Summer Camp 2014
Many of us in the Northern hemisphere are eagerly anticipating the return of the warm summer months while reading this issue's winter release, and get the double opportunity to both vicariously enjoy the summer alongside some training with Traditional Wing Chun Grandmaster William Cheung. This video captures the essence of sharing in the first-hand experience of being with an international figurehead for approximately 75 minutes, which are segmented into five chapters so that the viewer can quickly navigate this well-shot and edited digital download.
"This is a standard drill (Single Hand Chi Sau)… which is like learning how to walk", imparts Sifu Cheung in establishing the importance of maintaining one's practice with fundamental drills, which may be perceived as elementary as one evolves in their training curve during this video's first chapter. The basic movements are shown with a rapid evolution of the drill to expanded techniques. "If he moves, then you can deal with it", he continues to say while demonstrating static to moving applications with a training partner that offers continuous attacks that simulate, through practice, live attacks.
Sifu Cheung's seminar then moves on to disconnected positions relative to engaging fighting applications with an opponent. Addressing everything from multiple attackers, kick-oriented martial arts styles, Boxing combinations, being clinched or grabbed, and more. Every and all weapons that can be employed are explored, from punches to finger jabs, to elbows, to knees, and so on. Working a variety of distances and angles with priority to, "the blind side". A fighting strategy that keeps one outside and away from the other half of the opponent's body and weapons from being able to land a blow. Returning to the constructs of Chi Sau, but now two-handed, in sharing drills and concepts to work from inside to out.
Throughout his teaching, he keeps things simple and consistent in communicating the importance of controlling the attacker's elbow and position while maintaining a safe distance away from any possible follow-up attacks that could be delivered. Combat techniques that at times include the introduction of Chin-Na ("Joint Locking") techniques that render his volunteer immobile and in some considerable distress, as a result of their efficacy. These are broken down point-by-point to get a better grip on how to play them properly.
Sifu Cheung's many decades of experience as a practitioner and teacher of the system is very evident in his ability to articulate his message, from concept to construct to combat with ease and simple to follow messages. Magnanimously engaging every attendee in message, question and interaction. And as the summer training camp continues, so does the volume of information shared. An information and content-rich submission that many practitioners of Traditional Wing Chun would extract a great deal of value from with every viewing. And an inspiring example to all of the health and fitness benefits of Wing Chun as the then 75-year-old moves with the energy and coordination of someone in their thirties.
