William Cheung - Chi Sao & BOEC Sparring Seminar cover

To the seasoned Wing Chun practitioner and one who is also a student of the history and lineages that exist, there is a recognition that there are a great variety of approaches, training methods and ideals that, ultimately, meet at the same universal point, or practical fighting application, despite the aforementioned variety. A student of Grandmaster Ip Man, and now a Grandmaster himself, Sifu William Cheung shares his B.O.E.C. system, Chi Sao and Wooden Dummy applications during this recording of a seminar.

A living testament to the health benefits and longevity derived from martial arts. In his seventies at the time of recording, and currently 81 years of age, Sifu Cheung presents and performs with vigour, energy and clarity of message. Upholding the standing principal that Wing Chun should endure in its application, he takes centre stage with a demonstration of controlling centreline with a two-handed Chi Sao introduction of the fundamental objectives of, "taking the blindside and… controlling centre." The drills flow from technique to technique in a continuous evolution from one action to another, with kicks also being introduced.

It is important to note that unlike many instructional seminar recordings, this one is predominantly principle, technique and drills-driven rather than the popular perform-and-breakdown format that reinforces the goal of putting the system to work, from practice to practical application. Although there are titled sections, there are no designated chapters for the viewer to choose.

The spry Sifu Cheung also shows what a seasoned presenter he is, with a sense of humour that reminds one that plays in practice have their place in a communal environment. As the video continues, he reveals his deeper understandings of the workings of Wing Chun and the body, with the seasoned wisdom of a practitioner and instructor who keeps the language simple but reveals more through his actions to reach the range of experiences of those in attendance and viewing.

Interestingly, with most of the time dedicated to lively engagements, comes the fundamentals of balance, stance, structure and angles that support the ability to deliver the techniques demonstrated before addressing domestic engagement, such as being grabbed or compromised.

Although this is an excerpt from the seminar, there is a day's worth of information that will expand upon and reinforce one's training and understanding of his coined B.O.E.C. training system while further invigorating with each passing minute. Wrapping up this chapter are insights into the method and the man behind it, who takes his position with conviction, a smile and a flurry of fists that carries the practitioner to new levels in one's training, comprehension and application of self and system.
