WCI Review - Wayne Belonoha - Workshop 17: Technique Blending

This video is presented by Sifu Wayne Belonoha, a highly renowned teacher who has produced several videos and books on Wing Chun and is a former long-time columnist for Wing Chun Illustrated. Wayne belongs to the Moy Yat lineage, with the late Sifu Moy Yat being one of the best-known students of Grandmaster Ip Man.

At roughly 45 minutes long, the video is marketed as a workshop on "technique blending". However, the title seems somewhat misleading, as it does not demonstrate "technique blending" in the way one might expect, leading one to question the meaning of the term. "Technique blending" could imply a combination of various Wing Chun techniques, but this is not the focus of the content. Instead, it primarily concentrates on how to adapt techniques during Chi Sau in response to an opponent's actions. A more descriptive title would likely better capture the essence of the workshop's content.

More than 90% of the video consists of Sifu Belonoha delivering a rather long and repetitive monotonous speech about adaptation during Chi Sau. The only action in the video is a few minutes during which Wayne demonstrates "adapting" during Chi Sau, shown in slow-motion.

In this video, Sifu Belonoha highlights the importance of adapting to changes in an opponent's technique, speed and power. Early in the video, he uses the balance of a stick as a metaphor to illustrate maintaining focus and developing awareness during Chi Sau, which he refers to as a balancing game. Although Sifu Belonoha notes that mastering the techniques demonstrated can take up to five years, the video features very few actual demonstrations. I believe this video could have benefitted from more techniques and examples, and less talking.
