Samuel Kwok - Mastering Wing Chun Vol 15: Practical Application of Street Self-Defence 2 cover

Sifu Samuel Kwok needs no introduction, given that he is one of the most globally renowned and esteemed Wing Chun instructors, and one of the most famous and successful students of Ip Chun and Ip Ching, the two sons of Ip Man.

Sifu Kwok has produced a comprehensive library of instructional videos relating to forms and applications. Furthermore, his books are also classics, his first being one of the earliest English-language books on Wing Chun.

In this video, Sifu Kwok is joined by three instructors who are most likely his students. While one assistant has a minor role in the video, the other two are at the forefront. Sifu Kwok seems to be taking the back seat, a departure from his earlier videos. Despite being in his mid-seventies, he continues to display remarkable speed, agility and an impressive level of skill, and seems to be able to take care of himself in spite of his years.

The video is divided into three segments, each lasting approximately 16 minutes. It focuses on self-defence, presenting various techniques throughout. Additionally, Sifu Kwok's assistants delve into topics such as maintaining the right mindset during self-defence situations and identifying vulnerable targets in the human body.

While Sifu Kwok predominantly showcases classical Wing Chun techniques, his assistants primarily demonstrate joint lock techniques and even touch upon ground fighting. Regrettably, the video does not explore a wide range of self-defence scenarios. However, it does feature demonstrations of responses to different types of punches, such as uppercuts, hooks and straight punches, and addresses various grabs such as a rear bear hug. Additionally, Sifu Kwok provides insightful explanations and demonstrations of concepts such as four-corner defence and simultaneous defence and attack.

The video has a somewhat disorganised structure, failing to maintain interest throughout its duration. The occasional brief discussions on the proper mindset during a fight seem to lack depth and substance. I much prefer and enjoy the older videos of Sifu Kwok relating to the forms of Wing Chun and their practical applications.
