Sam Chan - Chi Sau Level 2 cover

The hallmark training drill of the Wing Chun system takes centre stage in this second part of the series by Sifu Sam Chan, exploring Chi Sau in the Intermediate Level of his training curriculum. In this simple, short and to the point instalment is the evolution of the drilled techniques to the application of it both in practice and purpose.

Following a brief written overview of the topics and techniques previously covered and continuing to be explored, the instructional platform resets to the fundamental of “Single Hand” Chi Sau to set the foundation of the expanded drills to follow. With the construct in place, the first lesson is focussed on, “trying not to use too much lesson… to develop a good flow of energy,” to set the relaxed tone of engagement before introducing Seung (“Double Hand”) Chi Sau with continued emphasis on flowing and switching position with attention to, “maintaining structure with every movement”.

Moving on, control of position and person involves the instructional lesson with a heightened focus on structure, timing and rooting of ones stance. A variety of antagonising techniques is worked into the drills with reference to their origins in construct and concept to the relative to the Siu Lim Tau, Chum Kiu and Mook Jong forms maintaining the focus of consistency in fundamentals.

With those essentials in place, Sifu Chan then moves to the introduction of specific hand actions such as Jut Sau, Lap Sau, Double Lap Sau, Double Lap Sau Push, Jing Jeung (“Upright Palm Strike”), Tan Sau, Jut Sau Chung Chu and several others, with expanded narration as to their individual points of interest in practice and purpose. These are demonstrated by both the presenter and his students, from static to active positions.

Now that the handwork has been sufficiently covered in drilling sequences, a livelier Chi Sau exchange is integrated with both single-handed and a combination of strikes employed to highlight the trained drills in their application in response to attacks from the Chi Sau positions.

“Footwork and rooting,” are the penultimate lesson plan of the video with an emphasis on balance, coordination and the appropriate constructs of footwork positioning that complement the hand techniques played. After a brief demonstration by the students, an unorthodox method of working ones balance is introduced, with both parties standing on benches.

For the finale, the practitioners wear protective gear, as all of the lessons presented, come together in the format of combat Chi Sau training. “The purposes of Chi Sau are to apply the appropriate techniques to counter the opponent’s attack. And also to improve the timing, reaction, control and reflexes”, summarises Sifu Chan. Aspiring to close the gaps between concepts, structures, drills and practical application to broaden ones perspectives, from partner to opponent, in a concise overview of their unique, yet universal, approach to the essential platform of Wing Chun’s practice of actions to applications.
