WCI Review - Randy Williams - Combat Drills Part 2: Advanced Blocks and Traps
The well-known Sifu Randy Williams presents this video, which is part two of a combat drills series relating to advanced blocks and traps. This video is approximately 50 minutes long and focuses mostly on the Lop Sau drill and the changes that can occur during the drill. There are also Sticky Leg drills, as well as Iron Palm training and a few other drills.
The video starts with a Wu Sau drill, which seems a rather practical and good drill for students to understand the use of Wu Sau. A Fon Sau drill follows. The drill is shown while stationary and while stepping. Finally, a kick is inserted into the drill. Inserting a kick into drills seems to be a common theme in many drills taught by Sifu Randy.
Sifu Randy uses two different partners for demonstrating the various drills, and instruction is clear and concise, as it tends to be with all the videos of his I have watched. They perform the drills at full speed, but then you get the opportunity to watch in slow motion, which helps you better understand the drills.
Following the demonstration of different variations of the Fon Sau drill, Sifu Randy shows the Lop Sau drill, which is a key drill in most Wing Chun lineages. He shows several different changes during the Lop Sau drill. The first switch to be demonstrated is the basic switch using a Lop Sau on the Wu Sau hand of our partner. The second switch to be shown takes place following a low palm strike, which is blocked by a Gaun Da. They later insert a kick to the drill. The next Lop Sau switch is the Biu Sau switch, followed by a Gum Da switch and finally a Pak Da switch. We then move on to a "Random Complex Switching", which includes all the different ways of switching mentioned above.
The video moves on to various Sticky Leg exercises, followed by instructions on how to do Iron Palm training. Sifu Randy uses several parts of his first and palm on a wall bag to toughen his palm, and various fist formations such as a Phoenix Eye Fist and a half knuckle fist.
Overall, this is a very good and enjoyable instructional video. The audio and video are excellent, and the instructions are clear and detailed.
