WCI Review - Randy Williams - Close-Range Combat Techniques Part 2: Straight Punches & Kicks
This is the second instalment in Sifu Randy Williams' series on close-range combat techniques, focusing on combat principles. The first instalment was reviewed in Issue 80.
With a run time of about 50 minutes, the video primarily explores defences against straight punches, combinations of straight punches, and a variety of kicks.
It's quite entertaining, presenting dozens of Wing Chun applications, which will no doubt provide viewers with plenty of ideas for potential Wing Chun combinations.
The video is divided into smaller sections, with clear and concise instructions. It opens with a demonstration of defences against jabs, where Sifu Williams, assisted by several of his students, showcases numerous fighting examples.
Following this, Sifu Williams introduces "open defences vs the jab", with various applications shown at both full speed and in slow motion.
The video then progresses to "closed defences vs the one-two", focusing on defences against consecutive straight punches, such as a jab-cross combination. Finally, it covers open defences against the one-two.
Sifu Williams then explains his approach to handling kicks, beginning with closed defences against kicks and concluding with open defences. His repertoire of techniques is impressive, including vertical punches, horizontal punches, uppercuts, open-hand strikes, knees, elbows, sweeps, kicks and, of course, his signature head butt.
It's particularly interesting to observe how he manages kicks, often employing stop kicks and using his legs to block. While he occasionally uses his hands for blocking, he favours using his legs to intercept kicks.
In a nutshell, this is a well-made video packed with useful information that could help anyone seeking new ideas on effectively using Wing Chun to defend against straight punches and various kicks.
The video's logical structure, excellent presentation and Sifu Williams' humour make it both enjoyable and informative.
