WCI Review - Randy Williams - Chum Kiu Combat Techniques
This video is presented by Sifu Randy Williams, who needs no further introduction. His Wing Chun instructional videos are true classics and have set a very high standard for Wing Chun instructional videos. The video is about an hour long and demonstrates an incredible 38 techniques used in Chi Sau. All these techniques are applications from the Chum Kiu form.
The amount of information presented is truly insane, and I have never taken so many notes while watching a Wing Chun video! The video is both extremely informative and very entertaining. Sifu Randy is funny, as usual, and cracks jokes non-stop while explaining the techniques presented. I particularly enjoyed the joke about Elvis Presley's deadly pelvis strike, amongst others.
The format of the video is rather unusual. It starts with a brief talk from Randy about Chi Sau. He then narrates to another person (presumably a student) what happens during a Chi Sau video that has already been recorded. Basically, he watches himself training in Chi Sau and explains all the moves that take place. The names of all 38 techniques shown are given, along with explanations for the use of these techniques during Chi Sau. The video of the Chi Sau training is shown at full speed and then played in slow motion so Sifu Randy can explain when each technique from Chum Kiu takes place during the Chi Sau session.
Sifu Randy demonstrates Chi Sau with several different students, and they train in a very lively and realistic manner. One student actually gets a rather red rib after receiving an elbow strike from his teacher.
Techniques shown include the standard Chum Kiu ones such as the straight punch, Bong Sau, uppercut, etc. But there is so much more than that. Several different kicks are shown, such as variations of the sidekick, a round kick, two different uppercuts, knee strikes and many other techniques. Although I have written down the Chinese names of all 38 techniques, it is unnecessary to list them as it would probably take more than half of the space I have available for this review.
In a nutshell, if you want to learn how to improve your Chi Sau and add more variety of techniques, this is a great video. Instruction is very clear, and video and audio are of high quality. A great video for any Wing Chun practitioner, and the jokes are a bonus.
