Moy Yat - Chum Kiu cover

Foundations are laid and continually fortified by the system figureheads from one generation to the next. Preserving the knowledge and integrity of practice imparted from teacher to student, and so on, in an ever-evolving cycle to maintain the propagation, health and relevancy of one's respective martial art in the celebration of its offerings and those that set the standard for future generations.

The late Sifu Moy Yat and his estate share those rare caught-on-film moments that see the scholarly, esteemed Wing Chun instructor sharing the constructs and concepts of the system's second empty-hand form in digital from its original analogue VHS format time-stamped from a seminar in January of 1990.

"The second form… is to train us to balance the body well when in motion", opens Sifu Moy Yat. Following up with a concise explanation that Chum Kiu's translation is to an evolutionary bridge of practice of the system segueing into performing the form by an attending student.

From form to the floor, the late instructor walks the audience through a step-by-step breakdown of each action of the form in sequence with the relative information on the specific technique's concepts and structures in both positions and motion. With attention to the featured technique of Bong Sau, the video then moves on from the sequential analysis to a section that exclusively features Sifu Moy Yat.

"Chum Kiu is a form which is difficult to do well", he continues, but its challenges are diminished by one's sound understanding of the Siu Lim Tau form in highlighting the evolutionary bridges of practising the system. The late Sifu then performs the actions as they appear in sequence while expanding on the information embedded within. A special treat to have captured on film for those who are of the Moy Yat lineage and those that are themselves scholars of all things Wing Chun.

As a special finale to the video, the late Sifu Moy Yat performs Chum Kiu in its entirety with fluidity and without interruption or dialogue as he was taught by the system's patriarch, Grandmaster Ip Man, with the well-known video footage of his performance of the form in his final days as a complement and comparison of the two. With clear appreciation and humility for his opportunity to have learned Wing Chun himself.

This offering will serve the individual practitioner well in providing the sequential blueprint as for how the form is practised in this lineage. Supported by the immortalised words, wisdom and information imparted by the Hong Kong native that continued to promote and spread the system's value across the world and through these moments captured in time. A volume amongst many of the video library that will serve up a foundation of the system's second form as well as fortifying the foundations of the learner. Building bridges from generation to generation without missing a step.
