WCI Review - Mohammed Ince - Wing Tsun Self Defense
This video is presented by Sifu Mohammed Ince from Germany and runs for around 40 minutes. The video is not divided into chapters but is a continuous one demonstrating techniques.
After briefly introducing himself, Sifu Ince goes on to demonstrate the techniques. The video title is a bit misleading since the video doesn't deal with self-defence scenarios. Sifu Ince doesn't show techniques for dealing with common self-defence scenarios. For example, someone holding a knife or gun, or attacking in several other ways, such as with a bear hug, or any other possibility that might arise on the streets or any other situation needing self-defence. Rather than self-defence, the video demonstrates fighting applications of Wing Tsun, but not techniques that represent actual self-defence situations.
A whopping 44 techniques are shown during this video! Sifu Ince and his partner (presumably a student) do a good job of demonstrating the techniques in a lively manner. A large variety of techniques are shown using Wing Tsun defensive tools such as Man Sau, Tan Sau, Gaun Sau, Bong Sau, Pak Sau, Lop Sau, etc. Attacking tools used include, straight punches, double punches, chain punching, Fak Sau, uppercut, hook punch, straight kick, side kick, elbows, takedowns, amongst others.
The format of the video is as follows. Sifu Ince and his partner (playing the role of the villain) stand facing each other ready to fight. Most of the time Sifu Ince's student attacks first and Sifu Ince deals with the attack. Sometimes Sifu Ince is the one initiating the fight, usually starting with an entry technique such as a Pak Sau.
They show each technique four times. The technique is first shown at full speed and then in slow motion. Then again, at full speed, but from a different angle. On the fourth time, they show the technique in slow motion from another angle. Thus, the viewer gets to observe the techniques from both sides in full speed and slow motion. Some techniques are not very clear, and an occasional close up would have been helpful. Sifu Ince provides no explanations about any of the techniques nor the principles and strategies of Wing Tsun.
I enjoyed the video, but it felt long and monotonous because of the lack of explanations, with the same format used throughout. Regardless, the video was informative and showed some interesting combinations and techniques.
