WCI Review - Markus Schinhammer - Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu
This video is presented by Sifu Markus Schinhammer, who is a German student of the well-known and highly respected Sifu Samuel Kwok. In essence, it is not an instructional video in the strict sense. Rather, it's a demonstration of dozens of combat applications and techniques of Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu. Unfortunately, most of them are presented at full speed with no slow breakdown or step-by-step instruction.
The video is around 63 minutes long and split up into 84 chapters of around a minute each. Sifu Schinhammer provides a brief introduction in the first chapter. Chapters 2-32 include combat applications presented by Sifu Schinhammer and his sparring partner Robert, who plays the villain and graciously takes the punishment.
Every combat technique is presented quickly, with less than a minute on most individual applications, before the presenter quickly moves on to the next one. Combat applications include how to deal with jabs, hook punches, and combinations such as a jab followed by a hook.
Chi Sau techniques are discussed in Chapters 33 and 34, and Sifu Schinhammer demonstrates several trapping moves. Because of the demonstration style of presentation, each Chi Sau chapter takes around four minutes to complete. From Chapter 35 to Chapter 84, additional combat applications are shown. The applications presented in these chapters relate not only with how to deal with various punches but also how to deal with kicks, how to deal with a grappler, and Sifu Schinhammer demonstrates his throwing techniques as well.
The video concludes with a few minutes of old footage of Sifu Schinhammer. This includes him demonstrating Chi Sau in front of a crowd, including the late Sifu Ip Ching, at the Ancestral Temple in Foshan, as well as practising Siu Lim Tao next to the grave of Grandmaster Ip Man.
More combat applications are shown in this video than in most Wing Chun videos on the market, and it will excite anyone looking for a video focusing on combat applications and not on the forms. There is an English voice-over (Sifu Schinhammer speaks German), which doesn't affect the audio quality. Unfortunately, the video is mostly made up of wide shots, so a few close-ups would have been useful to show the finer details of the trapping and blocking/parrying moves.
Sifu Schinhammer expects viewers to have a basic knowledge of the Wing Chun tools demonstrated. Therefore, this is mostly suitable for people who have already reached an intermediate or higher level of Wing Chun training and are looking to explore ideas for different fighting applications of Wing Chun.
