Leo Au Yeung - Wing Chun First Form: Sil Lim Tao cover

The well-known Sifu Leo Au Yeung from the UK presents this video. It has a running time of around 44 minutes in three chapters that correspond to the three sections of Sil Lim Tao. The purpose of this video is to explain the applications of the first empty-hand form of Ip Man Wing Chun and to show drills that can help train the tools of Wing Chun found in the Sil Lim Tao form.

Sifu Au Yeung demonstrates the first section of Sil Lim Tao in the first chapter, which is about 16 minutes long. He explains the first section as well as the function of the Wing Chun stance. Applications of this section of Sil Lim Tao and corresponding drills follow. Taan Sau, Fuk Sau, Pak Sau and the centreline punch are all explained, and drills for each of these techniques are demonstrated.

The second chapter of the video is around 12 minutes long and relates to the second section of Sil Lim Tao. Sifu Au Yeung demonstrates this section of the form, which is again followed by drills and applications. Applications shown are the side downward palm strike and the backward palm strike. Taan Sau is explained with applications and a drill. This chapter ends with applications and a drill on Jut Sau and Biu Jee.

The third and final chapter is about 17 minutes long. This section of Sil Lim Tao is demonstrated, and is once again followed by applications and drills. These relate to Pak Sau and side palm, Gaun Sau, Bong Sau, the low palm strike and continuous Biu Jee. Viewers may find it interesting how the Bong Sau is performed and how it is used to block a hook punch.

The video quality is good. Sifu Au Yeung clearly and concisely describes applications of the form, assisted by his students, who demonstrate the drills. This is not a video for beginners to learn Sil Lim Tao. Instead, it aims to explain the applications of the form as taught by Sifu Au Yeung, and does not explain the applications of all the moves of the form. Hence, it is not a definitive guide to the applications of Wing Chun's first form, but more of a brief overview.
