Leo Au Yeung - Wing Chun Chi Sau cover

The well-known and highly respected Sifu Leo Au Yeung presents this video on Chi Sau. As with other videos I have reviewed of Sifu Leo, this one is rather short, at around 25 minutes. Obviously, it is not possible to go deeply into Chi Sau in 25 minutes, but an overview is certainly possible.

The video is divided into nine brief chapters. In the first chapter, Sifu Leo explains the objective and function of Chi Sau, and explains that Wing Chun is a close-range art and that Chi Sau helps train these close-range skills and techniques. The second chapter covers the correct positioning of Taan Sau, Fook Sau and Bong Sau. In the third chapter, he demonstrates some basic applications of these three key Wing Chun techniques.

In the fourth chapter, Sifu Leo explains the changing hand positions during Chi Sau. He shows how to move your hands during Chi Sau from inside to outside, and from outside to inside. In the fifth chapter, Sifu Leo shows what he calls "The Three Major Techniques"—Lap Sau, "Pin Hand" and Pak Sau. What Sifu Leo calls "Pin Hand" is commonly known as Gam Sau. Sifu Leo shows how to apply these moves during Chi Sau. Furthermore, he shows how someone can counter these three trapping moves. This is perhaps the most entertaining part of the video, which I felt should have been longer.

Chapter six deals with reacting to different directional forces, and chapter seven explains how to deal with a hand grab. Chapter eight speaks about how to do Chi Sau with a taller partner, and Sifu Leo shows how he keeps a distance from a taller opponent and uses footwork to reach his opponent. Finally, chapter nine discusses how to do Chi Sau with a stronger opponent. Again, footwork and positioning are the keys to successfully dealing with a stronger opponent.

This is a nice but short video, giving a good overview of Sifu Leo Au Yeung's Chi Sau system. The instruction is good, clear and concise. One does, however, feel unfulfilled and thinks that the video should have been longer and more detailed.
