WCI Review - Jon Rister - Unconventional Trapping Parts 1 & 2
In this two-part video, Sifu Jon Rister demonstrates what he refers to as "unconventional trapping" They are indeed unconventional, as many of the techniques used, and their associated terminology, may not be recognisable to many Wing Chun practitioners.
This 50-minute video is divided into two approximately equal length parts. Notably, the video lacks any introduction or presentation by Sifu Rister. A brief online search reveals that Rister instructs in various martial arts disciplines, including Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do. The JKD influence is distinctly reflected in the drills shown throughout the video.
The video does not attempt to explain trapping or its purpose—it is a demonstration of trapping drills using focus mitts. Sifu Rister is the feeder throwing the punches while holding the focus mitts, and his partner (presumably his student) throws a variety of punches and strikes, using traps such as Pak Sau and Lop Sau. You don't get to see traditional Wing Chun hands such as Tan Sau, Bong Sau, etc., as the drills rely heavily on Pak Sau and Lop Sau.
The trapping techniques exhibit a distinct Jeet Kune Do influence, and the drills align more closely with the JKD concepts branch than with the branch commonly referred to as the "original" Jeet Kune Do. Notably, Sifu Rister openly embraces the JKD connection by explicitly identifying specific drills as JKD-specific.
Many of the drills look very similar, and the video feels rather monotonous. Perhaps some explanations on the practical applications of trapping or self-defence scenarios might have enhanced its interest and overall watchability. I didn't find the video particularly enjoyable, and I found it somewhat misleading because what you get is not unconventional Wing Chun trapping but focus mitts drills of Jeet Kune Do concepts. Nevertheless, the video could prove valuable for individuals seeking to integrate diverse focus mitt drills into their training regimen.
