Jon Rister - Joint Locks 2 cover

This video marks the second instalment in a series on joint locks by Sifu Jon Rister, with part one having been reviewed in the previous issue. Rister teaches Wing Chun, but he also offers instruction in other arts, such as Jeet Kune Do and Kali.

Focusing exclusively on joint locks, this video does not demonstrate any other aspects of the art of fighting. Basic trapping moves are presented, but only in the context of demonstrating the joint locks; detailed explanations or discussions of the trapping moves are omitted. Instead, it is assumed that the viewer already has a basic understanding of Wing Chun and JKD trapping.

The video is around 30 minutes, during which Sifu Rister demonstrates a variety of joint locks in a clear and concise manner. The drills commence from a position Sifu Rister refers to as a "Training Bridge", also known as a "Reference Point" in Jeet Kune Do, where Sifu Rister and his partner start with their wrists in contact. Typically, they begin with a Pak Sau, which is countered by the other practitioner using another Pak Sau. This is usually followed by a second trap, such as another Pak Sau, before transitioning to the joint locks. Consequently, all the joint locks demonstrated in this second instalment of the video are presented as a continuation of trapping moves.

The techniques presented in this video include joint locks, such as the Figure Four Lock Wrist Lock, Reverse Arm Bar, Wrist Lock and Finger Lock. Unlike the first part of the video, which did not detail the entry into the joint lock, this second part demonstrates specific trapping techniques leading to a joint lock situation. Thus, the joint locks serve as a "finisher" move.

Sifu Rister is methodological in the way he explains the techniques and provides detailed instruction on the execution of these joint locks. This is a good video for those interested in incorporating more joint locks into their repertoire of techniques or seeking ideas on how to transition to a joint lock from a trapping move such as Pak Sau or Lop Sau. Additionally, the video's concise and to-the-point format, free from long and unnecessary speeches, is a bonus.
