Sifu Harinder Singh - Mr. Mook Jong: Wooden Dummy Vol: 4-6 cover

Returning to the resident training environment of Sifu Harinder Singh, and transferring to digital media, the audience is welcomed to his unique practice, translation and expression of his Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do amalgamation. In this, three volumes in one instalment, the focus is on the distinct training apparatus of the Wooden Dummy. The breadth of information and demonstration is one of the larger video submissions released with an overall runtime of approximately three hours shot in high definition with fun camera play and music scoring that complements the energy of the presenter.

As with any introduction, the first volume and its parts cover the fundamental concepts and training methods that one needs to have in their pocket to practise and withdraw the value of training that the Wooden Dummy provides. Putting his best foot forward, Sifu Singh takes the focus away from the hands to working one's timing via footwork, examining how it is working with the body to activate techniques accordingly. From engaging the next zone bridges to, Boxing range, to evolve one's "skill, strategy and Shen (the psyche)" to maximise the efficacy of understanding and application in free-form style demonstrations with the Dummy as opposed to introducing the set sequence of movements first.

Moving on to the next chapter, Sifu Singh starts things off focusing on, "timed hits are hits when the arm is all the way out", assisted by a demonstration partner. The focus of the drills shown aspire to develop one to be "fluid, flexible and mobile", from direct lines of attack to moving angles and positions with high energy all the while engaging and disengaging the training partner, and ultimately an opponent, which evolves and expands to Jeet Sao concepts, "Hand-To-Hand Interceptions", and "Natural Follow-Ups" over the course of the three parts in this volume.

The final volume takes the principals, practices and drilling of the previous volumes for one to develop and to have skill sets, which reflect their individuality by translating the foundations set into a natural voice through their martial arts skill adding movements that further expanding the Jeet Kune Do practice of Wing Chun as extracted from the Mook Jong techniques and concepts. Now, with all elements in place in this final three parts, the exercises shown give way to a free form, controlled sparring exchange.

Sifu Harinder Singh provides an incredible amount with his instructional video. Leaning more to the practice of Jeet Kune Do than Wing Chun, but providing universally consistent fighting facts that are not bound by defines styles or systems. Working what the intention of the martial arts is (for those that pursue this path) in providing sound fighting skills that are transferable as opposed to the standard submission formats that offer the demonstration of the Mook Jong sets in sequence and then broken down section-by-section.
