WCI Review - Emin Boztepe - Kicks & Defense Against Multiple Attackers
Sifu Emin Boztepe is one of the most well-known and respected Wing Chun instructors globally, and is renowned for his realistic approach to fighting. This video is roughly 52 minutes long, and thoroughly enjoyable.
During this video Sifu Boztepe is assisted by three of his students. Two of them, Yiannis and Michael, play a big part in it. Yiannis is a very skilled and impressive kicker who demonstrates a variety of kicks used by other styles. Given his skill level in high kicks, spinning kicks etc., he has clearly trained in other styles before Wing Chun. Michael then demonstrates the Wing Chun kicks, which are less fancy and impressive, but practical and direct.
Sifu Boztepe demonstrates how to deal with a variety of kicks used in styles such as Muay Thai, Karate, etc. His student Michael also skilfully deals with a variety of kicks from Yiannis. The approach of Sifu Boztepe is to deal with kicks by moving forward towards your opponent when he is about to kick or while kicking. He does not agree with the approach of moving backwards, which can lead to an endless game. He sometimes simply moves forward, and Chain Punches his opponent while he is out of balance trying to execute a high-skill kick.
At other times, he intercepts his opponent's kicks with his own direct kicks, such as a straight kick or a low side kick to the knee. Further, he sometimes simply kicks his opponent's kick. At closer range, he also uses his own legs to jam a kick, as taught by the Chi Gerk ("Sticky Legs") exercise of Wing Chun. However, this is not Sifu Boztepe's preferred method of countering a kick due to the risk of injury to the practitioner's own shin.
The drill of Chi Gerk is also briefly demonstrated. Having demonstrated Wing Chun's kicks and how to deal with the kicks from other systems, Sifu Boztepe moves on to how to deal with several opponents. His approach, in a nutshell, is to avoid being in the middle of several different opponents and instead try to deal with one opponent at a time while making certain you are not exposed to the other attackers.
Towards the end of the video, Sifu Boztepe shows how to deal with weapon attacks, and finishes the video with the chapter called "Escrima Principles".
I thought the video was easy to watch, and the instructions contained in the video were very useful and practical. Probably one of the finest videos on how to deal with kicks while using Wing Chun.
