WCI Review - Chung Kwok Chow - Close Range Sticky Hands
Sifu Chung Kwok Chow is probably the most well-known student of Sifu Ng Wah Sum—who was a student of Sifu Leung Sheung. Sifu Chung is the founder of Integrative Wing Chun and has released several instructional videos, including another one on "Sticky Hands". "Close Range Sticky Hands" is around 40 minutes and, although not long, it is very comprehensive for its length.
The video starts with Sifu Chung explaining "Sticky Hands", the rolling movement and hand positions. He then explains that there are four range phases in his system of "Sticky Hands". The first phase is when you deal with your opponent's wrists; the second phase is when you are trapping his elbows; the third phase is when you get to the shoulders of your opponent, and the fourth is when you get to where his back is.
The purpose of "Sticky Hands", according to Sifu Chung, is to not only engage with your partner's wrists but to also gradually get closer and closer to him, even behind him, and take him down on the ground.
Sifu Chung then explains the initiating moves in "Sticky Hands", most commonly either a Pak Da or a Lop Da. As he shows how to advance from Range Phase 1 to Range Phase 4, he explains how energy in Wing Chun is never wasted. Besides hand strikes, he also uses kicks, knees, elbows, chokes and takedowns in his Chi Sau.
Sifu Chung explains that a Wooden Dummy should not be mounted on the wall and argues that in the old days in Mainland China they stuck the dummy into the ground so the Wing Chun player could move around it, and even behind it.
The next section of the video is about kicks and knees. Sifu Chung demonstrates a knee to the thigh while pulling the neck of his opponent, a cross stomp kick to the knee and other techniques. The last part of the video shows what Sifu Chung calls "Patty Cake Drills". Six drills are shown, including a Pak Da drill, a Bong Sau drill, a Pak Sau/Lop Sau drill, a variation of the Pak Da drill, an elbow strike drill and a "Circling Hand" drill with a palm strike to the face.
This is an easy-to-watch video that moves along quickly and demonstrates a large number of techniques. The video is high quality, and Sifu Chung Kwok Chow does a great job of summarising his "Sticky Hands" system.
