WCI Review - Benny Meng - Ip Man Wing Chun Series 8 Dummy Section 5-8

This is the second part of Sifu Benny Meng's series about the Wooden Dummy form and its applications. This second part deals with sections 5-8 of the Ip Man dummy form. The video is around 50 minutes long and follows a logical structure, as was the case with part one of the video (see Issue 71), which is related to the previous sections of the Wooden Dummy form.

The video starts with Sifu Meng's demonstration of the complete Wooden Dummy form. Afterwards, he introduces his three assistants, who assist him in presenting the video. In each section of the video, one of Sifu Meng's assistants performs a section of the form, followed by Meng explaining its applications. This structure is maintained throughout the video, with the same student performing each section and Sifu Meng providing explanations with the aid of his assistants.

The video mainly focuses on the applications of the form, so the details given may not be sufficient for someone to learn the form solely by watching this video. The applications are not always explained in detail, and not every single move of the form is explained. Numerous other videos on the market offer a more comprehensive analysis of the dummy form and its applications.

After sections five to eight of the dummy form have been performed and applications have been demonstrated, one of Sifu Meng's students shows the Air Dummy form. This form, practised by some Ip Man lineages and commonly in the Yuen Kay Shan branch, is then showcased. Basically, the entire Wooden Dummy form can be executed in the air without employing a physical dummy. This practice is convenient when a dummy is unavailable, and there are additional benefits associated with this practice as well.

The video concludes with Sifu Meng responding to questions from his three assistants regarding the Wooden Dummy form and its applications. Although the questions may seem pre-planned, they serve as an opportunity for Sifu Meng to provide additional insights about the form. Overall, this video offers a good general overview of Sifu Meng's interpretation of the applications of the Wooden Dummy form.
