What it’s about:

This DVD covers the use of the Wooden Dummy training apparatus or what is known as the Mook Jong of the Wing Chun system. The demonstration of the Wooden Dummy form is jointly performed by Master William Cheung and Sifu Eric Oram. The Mook Jong form consists of 108 classic movements specific to the Wing Chun system, in this DVD its self-defense applications are shown in eleven training sections. The basic and advanced techniques of the Mook Jong are derived from the Si Lim Tao, Chum Kil and the Bil Jee forms and are integrated into the “traditional system” of Wing Chun Wooden Dummy form as promoted by Master William Cheung. The advanced techniques of the Chi Sao system are also covered, which includes a demonstration of the cross hand Chi Sao training scenario.

Review – William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu DVD 4

What it’s about:

This DVD is the forth in the five volume set of William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu. It covers the basic weapon forms of this system. These weapons are identified specifically with Wing Chun Kung Fu and are known as the Butterfly Swords or Knifes and the Dragon Pole. The basic applications in the use of these two weapons are also covered and are demonstrated by Master William Cheung and Sifu Eric Oram.

Comments:

The Butterfly Swords or knifes are performed by William Cheung. Sifu Eric Oram again provides the narration for this DVD and describes the history behind the origin of this unique weapon. According to legend they are called Butterfly Swords, because they rotate inside and outside of the body as they are used in their application. One gets the impression from Sifu Orem’s description that the swords have to be custom made and must be a certain length which meet the needs of the user’s specific physical dimensions. It is said the blades of each sword cannot be too long or two short. If they are two long they may cause personal injury as they rotate inward, if they were too short the weapon’s effectiveness could be greatly sacrificed.

Review – William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu DVD 5

What it’s about:

“In this DVD, Cheung teaches the Wing Chun fighting strategy, including grappling defense and weapons defense. An introduction to dim mak (death touch) and advanced chi meditation are also covered in this volume.

Comments:

This is the last volume of William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu series. I have watched this single copy of volume five more times than I would like to say. My conclusion is that I was primarily left with many reservations regarding much of its content. The technical aspects of Wing Chun Kung fu which are performed in this DVD are certainly not in question. It’s obvious that Master Cheung and Sifu Oram know what they are doing. However, I actually felt this last volume is more filler used to promote and market a five volume set than to provide additional useful information or content.

Review – David Peterson’s Mook Yan Jong Seminar DVD

David Peterson’s “Mook Yan Jong (MYJ)” is a truly phenomenal DVD that takes the neophyte, student, or seasoned Wing Chung practitioner through the Mook Yan Jong form of Wing Chun as practiced by the “King of Talking with the Hands” Wong Shun Leung. The late Sifu Wong modified the MYJ form as taught by Grandmaster Yip Man due to Wong’s numerous challenge fights and conversations with his Sifu Yip Man. This DVD is a meticulous 208 minute study into the minutest detail of the Wong Shun Leung Mook Yan Jong form. The coverage details the form, presents the MYJ form from multiple angles for clear visualization of the form; shows examples of the applications, and elaborates on the insight that the late Sifu Wong Shun Leung gleaned from his numerous challenge fights. This is truly one of the definitive DVDs presented on the Wong Shun Leung lineage of the Mook Yan Jong form.

Review – Gary Lam’s Making Gwoh Sau Work For You DVD

Review by: Fred Sears

As usual, the delivery time for this dvd from EWC (“Everything Wing Chun”) was exemplary – approximately 3 days from when the order was placed to delivery to me.  When purchased as part of a bundle, substantial savings are possible.

Sifu Gary Lam is recognized worldwide as being one of the foremost authorities on the “Wong Shun Leung” system of Wing Chun having trained under him for 15 years and having been the head instructor at Sifu Wong Shun Leung’s Hong Kong school for six years.

This video of Sifu Lam’s – “Making Gwoh Sau Work For You” is full of demonstrations of Sifu Lam performing “gwoh sau” – a type of free hands sparring where pretty much anything goes albeit at lighter than full contact and sometimes, but not always, less than full speed between two wing chun practitioners that helps them to develop their wing chun attributes. It has the usual high production value that is familiar to me from Crane’s Productions and is about one hour long.

Review – Look Beyond the Pointing Finger (2nd Edition)

“Look at the Pointing Finger – The Combat Philosophy of Wong Shun Leung” is an expanded second edition of Sifu Peterson’s monumental work on Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun (WSLWC). Of course it is well known that Sifu Wong was one of the handful of sifus that finished the entire Wing Chun system directly under Grandmaster Yip Man’s guidance and training. And of course Sifu Wong was actively teaching within Hong Kong while Yip Man was still alive and was undefeated in his quite numerous Biemo contests.

Review – David Peterson’s Cham Kiu Seminar DVD

Once again Sifu Peterson, “The Blue Print of Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun” has produced an exceptional DVD video on Cham Kiu (bridge-seeking), the second form of Wing Chun titled “ Cham Kiu Seminar.” This seminar follows Sifu Peterson’s “Siu Nim Tau Seminar” format with the exception that Sifu Peterson shows the form before delving into the specifics of the techniques. Presented on two DVDs the seminar is quite lengthy due to the extraordinary amount of detail that Sifu Peterson covers, along with anecdotes about Wong Shun Leung’s philosophy, experiences garnered from Beimo and discussions with Yip Man, as well as including Wong’s student days, questions, exercises and review. The most important idea from Wong Shun Leung is that Wing Chun is concept based not technique based. There is no “if this then that” instead Sifu Wong viewed Wing Chun as a toolshed with perfect techniques/tools waiting to be utilized. If you have purchased or are thinking about purchasing the book “Look Beyond the Pointing Finger – The Combat Philosophy of Wong Shun Leung,” also by David Peterson and now in its second edition, this DVD is the perfect compliment. The philosophies discussed in the book are present in every part of the form and the actual execution of the form. In fact one might say that the David Peterson DVDs are an extension of the book.
