WCI Review – Sifu Harinder Singh Sabharwal – Mr. Mook Jong – Wooden Dummy 1-3

The strong roots of Wing Chun have brought growth to a strong tree by sprouting many branches and lineages, and inspiring an infamous Hollywood martial arts star’s foundation for his system of Jeet Kune Do. Sifu Harinder Singh’s passionate inspiration of both finds its way into this instructional video offering he puts in the work to the wood through the system’s signature training device, the Mook Jong, formatted in three sections broken down into three chapters per section for a total of nine chapters covering close to three hours of footage. Square up and take position for an expansive look at his Wooden Dummy training methods.

Sifu Harinder Singh opens this significant video submission by addressing the concepts, methods, goals, and training that will, “make sure that you’re always covered and closing your lines”, to evolve the training beyond the device to application as the DVD does. “The form teaches you structure, movement, alignment, position, concentration, body connection… so it’s important that you spend time on the form.” However, before any demonstration of the multiple variations of his Wooden Dummy sets, we look at breaking down the consistent and fundamental actions that will build upon the foundations a practitioner should already have established before learning the Mook Jong.

The presenter shares knowledge that goes beyond the traditional terminologies of martial arts with modern sciences addressing how connected muscle networks in activation create a state known as Muscular Irradiation that is consistent in martial arts and other forms of athletic investment. A diversified offering of knowledge to expand ones pool of knowledge to complement the provided demonstrations with partners that offer modes of attack relative to other fighting styles in supporting subsections titled Combat Flows to pressure the trained elements in real time with real pressure on top of the standard Wing Chun training format of Chi Sao.

The form and flow smoothly work from one topic of interest to another, cycling nicely from foundations, form, to fist, to function in an incredibly lively exchange with individuals providing active resistance as a benchmark of applied practice to explore the potential of the Mook Jong’s translated techniques.

Sifu Singh’s youthful passion is on full display as well, which some viewers will find inspiring, and it is clear he has unlocked what any martial art provides in how it works best for the individual. Both systems close to his heart, Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do, strike a balance in sharing his unique brand of training methodology. Keeping strong the foundations of the complementary systems, the commitment to putting the fundamentals to work, and pursuing practical and pragmatic means of employing them in various environments with an array of potential opponents. The one-time living tree is continuing to provide life to the martial artist with roots of one’s own that will spring branches of potential. Power comes from the ground up, and the brain outward. Solid submission.
