Review – Chu Shong Tin’s 1999 Seminar

What It’s About:

The basics of Wing Chun’s Siu Nim Tao and Chi Sau, are discussed and presented by Master Chu Shong Tin.

Comments:

Master Chun presents the fundamentals essential in learning and establishing skill in Wing Chun Kung Fu. In this seminar series as well as in all of the other instructional DVDs he has been featured in, Chu emphasizes how important the first form is in developing effective skill in the more advanced forms of the Wing Chun system. He outlines briefly in this seminar, the three basic stages of development from Siu Nim Tao to Bil Jee. The first stage in the practice, is where you establish your fundamental structure in the form, the Second Stage is how you move and direct your body mass toward the other persons center line and the Third stage is when you have integrated the principles of the Siu Nim Tao and Chum Kiu and are able to project the full destructive force of Bil Jee applications.

Review – Chu Shong Tin’s 1998 Wing Chun Seminar 3 Disk Set

This review covers all 3 disks in the set (all 9 hours of recorded footage).

What Disk 1 is About:

This DVD presents an in depth demonstration and discussion regarding the principles of Wing Chun’s first form, Siu Nim Tao.

Comments on Disk 1:

Master Chu, specifically in part 1, devotes his attention to Siu Nim Tao, Wing Chun’s first form. As in his previous series on Wing Chun basics he gives considerable amount of time to talking about and demonstrating the importance it has in building a sound foundation in Wing Chun. He describes the three levels of training from the stance to moving. Those who are knowledgeable about Wing Chun knows what is meant about centerline theory in this system…the benefit of the form’s structure and how the notion of focus and circular motion relates to this form. Many martial artists outside of the Wing Chun practice regard this martial art system as strictly linear…while in principle it is not. Master Chu demonstrates this basic principle of circle motion inherent in the Siu Nim Tao form through example and the use of simple props.

Review – Chu Shong Tin’s 1997 Wing Chun Intensive Seminar

This review covers all 3 disks (9 hours) of footage from the seminar.

What Disk 1 is About:

Master Chu Shong Tin, conducted a number of seminars on the Wing Chun System, this present series is for the year of 1997. Disk 1, presents the basic principles of the first two forms, Siu Nim Tao and Chum Kiu, followed by a Q&A session with Master Chu and seminar participants.

Comments on Disk 1:

For those persons exploring the Wing Chun system as a novice and for the experienced practitioner, this DVD is an excellent instructional medium. For the beginner, Master Chu describes and demonstrates how important the first form is and why it’s given considerable attention. In his seminar he clearly demonstrates how critical the correct structure in Siu Nim Tao is and how it establishes the foundation for the two remaining forms known as Chum Ku and Bil Jee. He does this exceeding well through example and discussion in showing how body alignment and position as it relates to the target and the movements of the Siu Num Tao form.

Review – Austin Goh’s Training with the Master DVD

What It’s About:

Sifu Austin Goh, presents a complete training class for martial artists of all levels. This DVD includes basic stretching, kick forms, sparring techniques, applications, breathing exercises and chi sao.

Comments:

If you were to go to England and worked out at Sifu Goh’s, studio or Kwoon, the kind of training which you would encounter is best shown in this DVD. This production is done in sort of a hand held camera style to give one the feeling “that you are there” with lots of moving frames and at times problems with the sound, at least in the copy that I have. But pictures are worth a thousand words, so in a movie your eyes and internal auditory dialogue have lots to feast on…given the production style of this DVD, you’ll see how intense Sifu Goh, makes his students work!

Review – Austin Goh’s Butterfly Knives Form DVD

What It’s About:

This DVD provides basic instruction in the 108 “Butterfly Knives Form” of the Wing Chun Kung Fu System.

Comments:

This DVD presents the basic movements of the “Butterfly knives Form” or Butterfly swords of the Wing Chun Kung Fu system. The form is performed by Sifu Goh, in a more or less continuous form style. Critical movements and their Cantonese terminology are presented in titled frames, before each performance. These Chinese or Cantonese terms are given in Pin Yin and English. If you are unfamiliar with the terms in Wing Chun Kung Fu or with the sword form specifically, this will be an excellent DVD, to learn the Chinese terminology correctly. This would be a great learning aid and definite help if you plan on traveling aboard to learn Kung Fu at a Chinese School.
