Review – Sam Chan’s Lok Dim Boon Gwan DVD

Traditional Wing Chun training will involve learning to use two special weapons — the Lok Dim Boon Gwan (Six and a Half Point Pole) and the Bak Jom Dao (Eight Chopping Swords). As with everything in Wing Chun, there is definite thought and reasoning behind training with these particular weapons. The pole is a single, long weapon and the swords are double, short weapons. Thus, as you train with each weapon, you are learning alternate movements, theories, and applications that can be applied with to a variety of other weapons without having to spend the additional time training. In the IWCMAA the long pole is taught at the 5th Level of training just after the Wooden Dummy.

Review – Chu Shong Tin’s Ving Tsun Kuen DVD

What It’s About:

Master Chu presents a discussion and demonstration of the three forms of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu and Bil Jee. He also provides a demonstration of the Mook Jong set and the Dragon Pole forms both with applications.

Comments:

This DVD is similar to the instructional seminar series conducted in Sidney Australia. However, there are differences in content and explanatory narrative. If you speak Cantonese, you shouldn’t have any problems in understanding what is said and demonstrated. If you have attended the seminars in Australia, or purchased the Master Chu Shong Tin, Wing Chun seminar series from “Everything Wing Chun,” it shouldn’t be a problem for you either. If you’re a beginning Wing Chun student, however, this DVD perhaps would not be the best option for you.

Review – William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu DVD 4

What it’s about:

This DVD is the forth in the five volume set of William Cheung’s Wing Chun Kung Fu. It covers the basic weapon forms of this system. These weapons are identified specifically with Wing Chun Kung Fu and are known as the Butterfly Swords or Knifes and the Dragon Pole. The basic applications in the use of these two weapons are also covered and are demonstrated by Master William Cheung and Sifu Eric Oram.

Comments:

The Butterfly Swords or knifes are performed by William Cheung. Sifu Eric Oram again provides the narration for this DVD and describes the history behind the origin of this unique weapon. According to legend they are called Butterfly Swords, because they rotate inside and outside of the body as they are used in their application. One gets the impression from Sifu Orem’s description that the swords have to be custom made and must be a certain length which meet the needs of the user’s specific physical dimensions. It is said the blades of each sword cannot be too long or two short. If they are two long they may cause personal injury as they rotate inward, if they were too short the weapon’s effectiveness could be greatly sacrificed.
