Review – Chu Shong Tin’s 1998 Wing Chun Seminar 3 Disk Set

This review covers all 3 disks in the set (all 9 hours of recorded footage).

What Disk 1 is About:

This DVD presents an in depth demonstration and discussion regarding the principles of Wing Chun’s first form, Siu Nim Tao.

Comments on Disk 1:

Master Chu, specifically in part 1, devotes his attention to Siu Nim Tao, Wing Chun’s first form. As in his previous series on Wing Chun basics he gives considerable amount of time to talking about and demonstrating the importance it has in building a sound foundation in Wing Chun. He describes the three levels of training from the stance to moving. Those who are knowledgeable about Wing Chun knows what is meant about centerline theory in this system…the benefit of the form’s structure and how the notion of focus and circular motion relates to this form. Many martial artists outside of the Wing Chun practice regard this martial art system as strictly linear…while in principle it is not. Master Chu demonstrates this basic principle of circle motion inherent in the Siu Nim Tao form through example and the use of simple props.

Review – Chu Shong Tin’s 1997 Wing Chun Intensive Seminar

This review covers all 3 disks (9 hours) of footage from the seminar.

What Disk 1 is About:

Master Chu Shong Tin, conducted a number of seminars on the Wing Chun System, this present series is for the year of 1997. Disk 1, presents the basic principles of the first two forms, Siu Nim Tao and Chum Kiu, followed by a Q&A session with Master Chu and seminar participants.

Comments on Disk 1:

For those persons exploring the Wing Chun system as a novice and for the experienced practitioner, this DVD is an excellent instructional medium. For the beginner, Master Chu describes and demonstrates how important the first form is and why it’s given considerable attention. In his seminar he clearly demonstrates how critical the correct structure in Siu Nim Tao is and how it establishes the foundation for the two remaining forms known as Chum Ku and Bil Jee. He does this exceeding well through example and discussion in showing how body alignment and position as it relates to the target and the movements of the Siu Num Tao form.

Review – Austin Goh’s Wing Chun for Intermediate DVD

What it’s about:

This DVD primarily provides visual instruction in the second form of the Wing Chun system of martial arts, which is known as Chum Ku.

Comments:

If a student has reached this level of training then the purpose of this form would be clear. It is the form which begins to allow the student to bridge the gap between technique leading to more physical movement and contact with the opponent. Although, some of this is experienced in the preparatory drills and exercises with a partner in the first form, its emphasis is noticeably different. It’s an important form because its structure is built on the Si Lim Tao form and provides the basis for more complex techniques using the elbow and basic kicks

Review – David Peterson’s Cham Kiu Seminar DVD

Once again Sifu Peterson, “The Blue Print of Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun” has produced an exceptional DVD video on Cham Kiu (bridge-seeking), the second form of Wing Chun titled “ Cham Kiu Seminar.” This seminar follows Sifu Peterson’s “Siu Nim Tau Seminar” format with the exception that Sifu Peterson shows the form before delving into the specifics of the techniques. Presented on two DVDs the seminar is quite lengthy due to the extraordinary amount of detail that Sifu Peterson covers, along with anecdotes about Wong Shun Leung’s philosophy, experiences garnered from Beimo and discussions with Yip Man, as well as including Wong’s student days, questions, exercises and review. The most important idea from Wong Shun Leung is that Wing Chun is concept based not technique based. There is no “if this then that” instead Sifu Wong viewed Wing Chun as a toolshed with perfect techniques/tools waiting to be utilized. If you have purchased or are thinking about purchasing the book “Look Beyond the Pointing Finger – The Combat Philosophy of Wong Shun Leung,” also by David Peterson and now in its second edition, this DVD is the perfect compliment. The philosophies discussed in the book are present in every part of the form and the actual execution of the form. In fact one might say that the David Peterson DVDs are an extension of the book.
